I’m in a low-risk flood zone, do I still need flood insurance?
The short answer is, if you live in Louisiana, yes, you should have flood insurance, but it isn’t legally required if you’re in a low-risk zone!
Flooding is defined as rising water and can be due to drainage back-up, a levee breach, over flowing waterways, etc. According to FEMA’s website, nearly 25% of flood claims are from areas that were in a low to moderate risk zones, and these claimants only received ⅓ of the Federal Disaster Assistance, which will need to be repaid.
If you are in a preferred, or low-risk zone, you may qualify for the lowest premium available. https://www.fema.gov/faq-details/Low-Risk-Flood-Zone/
In Louisiana that could be less than $35/month, a small price to pay for peace of mind.
